Pern Wiki

A wingsecond was second in command to a wingleader. A wingleader might have one or two wingseconds, who could take over during Threadfall if the wingleader was injured or killed.

Role and Responsibilities[]

Wingseconds were chosen by a wing's leader, and were usually skilled bronze or brown riders. Wingseconds helped to relay orders to the remainder of the wing, and could take up other duties as requested by the wingleader. While flying thread, a wingsecond was expected to take over in the event the wingleader was injured or killed. Wingseconds were expected to be given a certain amount of respect by other riders. A wingsecond's importance could vary depending on which wingleader they served under. Being wingsecond to the Weyrleader would place the wingsecond in a very prominent position.

History[]

In the Ninth Pass, F'nor was a wingsecond for his half-brother F'lar. F'lar often relied heavily on F'nor, and was prone to rearranging things to suit himself in F'nor's absence.
