Torene Ostrovsky was born six years after Landing to Volodya Ostrovsky and Sonja Ostrovsky. She became the first Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr after her dragon, queen Alaranth, was flown by Brianth.
Biography[]
Torene had a loving childhood with her geologist parents, especially her mother[1] who was a great storyteller.
Impression and leading up to the Second Weyr[]
She Impressed queen Alaranth at the hatching of Faranth's clutch. She was congratulated by Paul Benden who was escorted by M'hall. Alaranth grew well and eventually became the largest Queen on Pern, practically double the size of her dam Faranth.
Because Fort Weyr housed over 2,000 dragons, the younger riders were in very cramped quarters, meaning Torene was sleeping right next to her queen. She told Sorka, then senior Weyrwoman, that she would like to have more space, and she had found the perfect place for a new Weyr in a crater on the East Coast.
After her impassioned appeal to Sorka for a new Weyr was overheard by Weyrleader Sean, Torene was heartened to learn that such plans were already in the offing. As she had earlier created geological survey plans of the area, she provided copies that her parents had made for her.[2]
Shortly thereafter, Sean announced that it had been decided to form three new Weyrs. While people were to draw lots on where they would be assigned, it became apparent that this public display of fair choice was Sean's way of making sure that Torene, whose Alaranth was predicted to be the next queen to rise, would be Weyrwoman at the Weyr on the east coast. Although Sean wasn't a big fan of Torene's forthright nature, he believed that her ability to hear all dragons, like Sorka, was an advantage.
Benden Weyr[]
Shortly after the creation of Benden Weyr, Alaranth rose to mate and was quickly caught by bronze Brianth. Although Torene did not know this, Brianth's rider, M'hall, had been smitten with her ever since he saw her impress Alaranth, and only stayed away from her because Sean had warned him away from the queenriders of Fort, so as to prevent one dragon from siring too many clutches.
Personality and Appearance[]
Torene was unconsciously beautiful, with short black hair and long eyelashes. She was kind-hearted, and she could hear all dragons.
Notes[]
In Dragonflight, F'lar praises Lessa by comparing her to Torene as "one of our greatest Weyrwomen". It should be noted, however, that F'lar says Torene came from Ruatha, whereas in The Second Weyr her parents were geologists settled near Telgar Hold.
