Teaching Ballads were used on Pern to teach important information.

Late in the First Interval, Clisser, Head of the College, decided that Pern needed a new curriculum for teaching students. With the loss of much of the technology the colonists brought to Pern, teachers had to change both what and how they taught. Clisser realized that music was one of the best ways to learn, so he instituted a new curriculum that used Teaching Ballads to teach everything.

Late in the Eighth Interval, Robinton wrote for many of the newer Teaching Ballads. His protege, Menolly, wrote several Teaching Ballads in the Ninth Pass.
