Tagetarl was a Harper in the Harpercraft, during the Ninth Pass. He later became the first Craftmaster of the Printercraft.

Biography

Tagetarl was one of four Harpers - Sebell, Talmor, Brudegan, Tagetarl - who accompanied Robinton to Telgar Hold to entertain at the wedding of Lord Asgenar and Lady Famira. Asgenar was Lord Holder of Lemos and Famira was the half-sister of Larad, Lord Holder of Telgar.

Before the performance, Robinton reminded Tagetarl to wait until after the banquet to charm the girls. "Remember, you’ll be a full harper too soon to jeopardize a good Holding." Later on, Robinton called on Tagetarl to entertain Kylara.

After the discovery of AIVAS, Tagetarl was brought in to take full notes of a meeting of seven Lord Holders, eight Craftmasters, eight Weyrleaders, and four Weyrwomen.

Tagetarl later relayed to Robinton that AIVAS wanted the Harper Hall to build a printing press. When Robinton asked why, Tagetarl explained that AIVAS had a need to conserve paper for essential purposes. The printing press provided the Pernese with their own replication machines that could be used for music or other nonessential means. In addition, AIVAS felt that Harper Hall was best suited to making printing presses due to its understanding of Harper duties. Tagetarl was selected to create type-font sheets due to his carving skill. It was then decided that the first printing press should be constructed at Landing.

When the Printercraft was established as an independent craft, Tagetarl was chosen as the craft's first Masterprinter. By the time of The Skies of Pern, Tagetarl was married to Rosheen, who assisted him in the new craft. Tagetarl established a Printer Hall at Wide Bay Hold, using sky-broom tree wood doors for the gate because metal was too expensive. Even though Keroon Hold could be seen from Wide Bay Hold, Tagetarl's office was faced in such a way that he was not able to see when a dragon took off from the fire heights at Keroon Hold.

Tagetarl sent Lessa a copy of the dictionary that he copied from Aivas’s files, with definitions of technical terms. It was far more current than anything the Harper Hall had; and, Sebell said he had received orders from every major hold, nearly all the minor ones, and most of the halls. However, Tagetarl soon found he had to get through the corrections to the dictionary; some old harpers with too little to do were challenging definitions and deploring the new technological ones, which were vital if young students were to understand the language in which manuals were written.

In addition to printing books and manuals for sale, Tagetarl also printed news to be distributed publicly, such as during the Fireball Flood when he provided warnings regarding the flood's effects. The spread of printed facts had prevented the Abominators from using the flood to gain followers, since most Pernese came to believe that AIVAS's technology had prevented greater disaster.

As a result of his work, Tagetarl and his craft became the target of the Abominators (who considered AIVAS to be an abomination). After Runners discovered a plot to destroy the “abomination” and end its evil influence on the people of Pern, they passed the information on to Pinch. Pinch warned Tagetarl of the plot and took measures to protect the hall, which included the use of a fire-retardant paint discovered by Piemur in AIVAS's files. When the plot was acted upon one night, Pinch's efforts resulted in the Abominators being caught red-handed, with the only harm being to the hold's outer gates and a window. When Tagetarl confronted the Abominators, they insisted that he printed lies. Jaxom and N'ton were called upon to serve as witnesses at the trial that was held in front of Wide Bay's Holders, who also chose to serve as witnesses. The conspirators were all exiled for their actions.

When the new Sky Watch was proposed, Tagetarl was kept busy printing technical manuals for the new craft.
