Southern Weyr, as the name implies, lies in the Southern Continent of Pern. It was opportunely chosen as a place of rest and recovery for dragon riders wounded in battle against the Thread due to the fact that the Southern Continent receives very little Threadfall. As the Ninth Pass approached, like all the other weyrs save Benden, it was abandoned. When Kylara managed to impress Prideth of Ramoth's first clutch, F'lar sent Kylara and Prideth ten turns back with his half-brother F'nor to give Prideth time to mature and rise to mate. F'lar's aim was to allow Prideth and Ramoth to refill the empty weyrs. While this plan was unsuccessful in its intent due to the lack of time before the return of the Thread it did signify the revival of the Southern Weyr and the subtle banishment of Kylara from Benden (to Lessa's delight).

Up until the end of Dragonquest Kylara was the senior Weyrwoman of the Southern Weyr and T'bor of Orth was the Southern Weyrleader. When F'lar concluded his duel with the Oldtimer T'ron (or T'ton) the Oldtimers that rejected Benden's seniority in the modern Pern were banished to the Southern Weyr where their malicious ways could do little harm to the people of Pern (by refusing to fight the Thread).
