Sh'gall was the Weyrleader of Fort Weyr during the feline-caused flu plague late in the Sixth Pass. His dragon was bronze Kadith.
Sh'gall was holdbred. According to L'mal and Leri, he was an able wingleader, and during Threadfall, they needed the best one.
Sh'gall's bronze outflew other males to mate twice with Moreta's gold Orlith, after which he became Weyrleader of Fort Weyr. Already intolerant and somewhat unimaginative, he became increasingly difficult after contracting the flu. After the deaths of Moreta and Leri’s queen Holth, Sh’gall was visibly distressed.
Given that his behaviour during the plague had alienated most of the Weyr’s senior riders, it was perhaps unsurprising that Sh’gall lost his position as Weyrleader to G’drel, bronze Dorianth’s rider, when the new Weyrwoman Kamiana’s queen Pelianth next rose. Five Turns into the Sixth Interval, Sh’gall remained a Wingleader and was little heard of outside the Weyrs.
Personality and traits[]
<<Fully male and holdbred>>, Sh'gall did not understand the same-sex relationships between green and blue riders like Berchar and S'gor or K'lon and A'murry. He was also somewhat unimaginative and literal - when trying to avoid the flu, for example, he bathed in the Ice Lake after Masterhealer Capiam described the disease as being like Thread, which cold killed. In fact, Sh’gall may have hastened the incubation period by doing so.
Since Sh'gall had never been ill, it came as a terrible shock to his self-esteem when he caught the flu. He couldn't stand having Jallora treat him, because he preferred Capiam. As a result, Sh’gall became increasingly difficult, turning both Moreta and Orlith against him. Had the pair not died soon afterwards, it seems unlikely that his Kadith would have been able to catch Orlith in her next mating flight.
