Oats were a Terran grain, brought to Pern by the colonists, which did well in the rich native soil. It was successfully transferred north after the Second Crossing. Sonja Ostrovsky served it to her daughter Torene when the weyrwoman visited to get replicated maps of the new East Coast Weyr.

Because it was good quality and care was taken in both the handling and the cooking, there was no husks in the breakfast porridge that Debera had at Telgar Weyr after her Impression to green Morath.

In the mountain pass, before Iantine was rescued, smallholder Fendler had shared what little food he had with him; oats were among those foods.

The watch-wher Kisk was fed a porridge of oats and fresh blood until he was old enough to eat meat scraps without help.

Felleck, slovenly holder and eventual holdless man, complained about boiled grains as a dish to serve a grown man.
