During the plague, she was disgusted by Lord Tolocamp's behavior and snuck out of the Hold wearing false Healer garments. She helped in an internment camp where Tolocamp was forcing the sick to stay, and journeyed to Ruatha when that was struck. She cut her hair in an effort not to be recognized. She was at High Hill Hold when M'barak was sent for ornamental glass bottles, and folks that know runnerbeasts.
She helps the folks from High Hill Hold and the glass bottles from the back of Blue Arith and switches places with Moreta, after their return from gathering the needed needlethorn.
In Ruatha, she helps Alessan get things up and running after the plague. She also recalled that Fort Hold also had the larger apprentice made bottles but was unsure what her mother had done with them. She is with him after the plague and is there when Moreta is lost between. He marries her the next day because she «will not permit him to kill himself unless he has provided Pern with at least one suitable heir». He assumes she is volunteering and for the next few months they try to conceive so Alessan can suicide.
At the Hatching of Orlith's eggs, Alessan's sister Oklina impresses and he loses his will to hold on to Moreta's memory and finally accepts his love for Nerilka. A Turn afterwards, they have their first child.
Nerilka accepts that Alessan will never love her as he did his first wife, Suriana, or Moreta, but she hopes that together they can have the sort of love that he never could have experienced with either of the others.
