Being made Nameless was a punishment on Pern. In addition to being Shunned, the criminal had his name taken away, and it was never spoken.
In the Second Interval, Tarik was Shunned and made Nameless after his intentionally careless actions caused a cave-in at Camp Natalon. He was sent to work at a firestone mine.
