(For the settlement established on the Far Western Continent early in the Third Pass, see this page.)

Monaco Bay Weyr was the second Weyr created on the Southern Continent during the Ninth Pass. It was located on the far eastern explored portion of the Southern continent. Landing, Cove Hold, Paradise River Hold and Rubicon River Hold were beholden to Monaco Bay Weyr.

Description[]

A detailed description of the Weyr (copied from The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern) established the surrounding countryside, the economy and other relevant features.

Eastern Weyr, in the volcanic range just above Landing, was administered by Weyrleader T'gellan and bronze Monarth, and his weyrmate Mirrim and green Path.

Most of the dragons and riders at Eastern were young. Quite a few of them studied in the AIVAS complex and helped with excavation of Landing.

At Monaco Bay Weyr, dragons and riders did not live in a dormant volcano caldera as they did in the north. Instead, dragons who were old enough to move out of the weyrling barracks slept in sandy wallows. Riders had small accommodations suited to their needs in and around the common Weyr facilities. The kitchens were substantial, but most of the cooking took place in the open air.

A rider might have had a single room Hold, with a hammock and a clothes press or chest to hold his riding gear and repair tools. Because the entire continent was grubbed, one might live right in the jungle without fear of threadfall infestation of burrows.

Near the sea strand at the mouth of the river that ran along the Weyr, rider T'lion hung a small bell in the branches of a large tree for calling dolphins.

Weyr Features[]

Monaco Bay Weyr was described as another «open-air weyr» because the Southern Continent had an auspicious lack of cliffs suitable for Weyrs. It was established very close to the ancient hold of Monaco Bay Stake, which was a fishing center before the Second Crossing.

Capacity[]

That of any other Weyr. After Monarth and Arwith produced many clutches with queen eggs, a population problem developed, which led to F'lessan searching for a spot for a ninth weyr. As a result, he discovered the abandoned Honshu Stake then developed the Honshu Weyrhold.

Protected Territories[]

Monaco Bay apparently protected the territories not covered by the Southern Weyr, at least as far as the Rubicon River. Such a large protected area was due to the fact that this part of the continent had a low population density. After Ted Tubberman's grubs had successfully spread across the Southern Continent, they protected vegetation from threadfall.

History[]

Eighth Interval/Ninth Pass[]

Monaco Bay Weyr was originally established as «Eastern Weyr» and was the second weyr established in the Southern Continent - after the seven temporary Weyrs established on the Far Western Continent late in the Second Interval and early in the Third Pass (often referred to as the Great Isle Weyrs) became overcrowded during the Ninth Pass.

Monaco Bay Weyr was originally made up of just weyrlings and older dragons. As most of the Southern Continent wasn't occupied at the time of its establishment, more experienced riders weren't needed to combat threadfall. The Weyr helped provide security for Landing after several incidents of vandalism by Abominators.

Monaco Bay Weyr was one of the worst victims of the Fireball Flood, caused when a meteor fell into the sea and caused a Tsunami. Advanced warning from AIVAS computer systems provided enough time for an evacuation. Even though few lives were lost, most of the structures were destroyed. Monaco Bay Weyr was soon rebuilt; but, it took longer for the land itself to recover.
