M'kal was a dragonrider late in the Second Interval. He lost his brown dragon in a firestone explosion. Then, as Mikal, he was a healer at Harper Hall.
Biography[]
Mikal became Harper Hall's famous recluse, living in a crystal cave in seclusion. He had devoted himself to the study of healing and had become a master in his own right, developing his own brand of healing arts, which relied mostly on crystals, physical exercises, and meditation. His techniques were unique to the Harper Hall. Many otherwise incurable injuries had been overcome with his practices. Before the flu pandemic, he was already a legend among healers.
While at Healer Hall, Zist asked Mikal to teach the mute Pellar woodcraft. But, first, Mikal introduced Pellar to colored beads and pots of colored paints, then asked Pellar to draw a picture of himself. When Pellar was able to determine, on his own, the color of Mikal's dragon, Mikal told Zist he wanted to train the boy and teach him healing, painting, tracking, meditation - "everything I know."
Turns later, when he learned of the death of Pellar's fire-lizard Chitter, Mikal relived the loss of his own dragon.
After tens of Turns in his cave near the Harper Hall, Mikal had learned to cipher the drum codes. When "A triple emergency, help for Master Aleesa" drum message came from Crom, asking for a healer, Mikal agreed to Murenny's request that he go to Aleesa's Wherhold. Mikal told Murenny that Kindan should go with him. After treating Aleesa and admiring the crystal rock in the cave at the wherhold, Mikal announced that he would be staying there because, "there is good rock here and the watch-whers are pleasant company."
When Kindan asked Mikal if he knew of a different firestone, Mikal told Kindan that his dragon had died in a firestone explosion. Kindan then told Mikal that Records speak of fire-lizards chewing it on the shore of the Southern Continent, to which Mikal replied that the sea air alone would destroy the firestone that killed his dragon, to say nothing of sea spray and the tide. So, if there was a different firestone, they would need to look for stones that fire-lizards eat.
While Mikal was still at Aleesa's Wherhold, Kindan was brought to him to train for his upcoming duel with Vaxoram. It was Mikal who gave Kindan the idea that, "No one fights well when they’re worried about their eyes."
By the time of Dragonheart, Mikal had died of old age. Before he died, he told M'rorin that if he'd had the chance, he would have gone between forever with his dragon.
Personality and Traits[]
He could track anyone across bare rock, used crystals and meditation to effect healing in ways that not even the Masterhealer fully understood and was a better swordsman than Master Detallor, himself a master of the blade.
