Kalvi was chief of the mechanical engineers late in the First Interval and early in the Second Pass.
Biography[]
Kalvi was at the gather at Fort Hold, where everyone was discussing the predicted arrival of threadfall next Spring. Kalvi reported that since he had checked the maths for the return of the Red Star, and concurred with everyone that threadfall would return, he had scheduled every major hold with three days of training in the maintenance and repair of the flamethrowers, and a practice session. He also advised S'nan that, even though his foundry had turned out sufficient HNO3 cylinders to equip the groundcrews, the HNO3 must be made up on site.
Kalvi told Paulin that he was going to need more ore: ore that was closer to the surface than the Telgar deposits. He continued by saying that he had found an acceptable site in the Great Western Range, which had high-grade ore of the quality that would be required whenever they needed to replace flamethrower equipment. When asked whether he wanted to start a mine or a hold, he said he would prefer to start a hold. When asked about the mines Chalkin had deactivated in Steng Valley, Kalvi told Paulin that the ore was second-rate and the mines were unsafe. When Kalvi's hold was approved, he was told to tell his engineers to start the project.
When Salda suggested that they come up with a permanent, indestructible, unambiguous, simple way to for everyone to know that the Red Star and threadfall would be returning, Clisser suggested something on the order of a Rosetta Stone. They finally settled on what was later known as the Star Stones, which Kalvi helped Clisser create and set up.
Kalvi also provided Corey with the new bonecutters for medics to use.
