Kale was Lord Holder of Ruatha Hold late in the Eighth Interval.
Biography[]
Kale became Lord Holder of Ruatha following the death of his father, Lord Ashmichel. He ruled alongside his wife Lady Adessa, with whom he had several children, Lessa being the youngest.
During the rise of Fax as a conquerer of holds, Kale did not take Fax seriously as a threat. Instead, Fax was able to gain Kale's trust by purchasing Ruathan Runnerbeasts. MasterHarper Robinton visited Kale and attempted to convince Kale of the Fax's threat to his Hold. He was eventually able to convince Kale to consider stationing border guards; but, the effort came too late.
Fax invaded Ruatha Hold at sunrise, a time when the watch-whers were traditionally relieved of duty. During the attack, Kale, alongside the majority of his family, was slaughtered by Fax. Only Kale's daughter Lessa survived, after which she was forced into hiding. Lessa eventually played a part in overthrowing Fax, but chose to become Benden Weyr's Weyrwoman rather than claim Ruatha Hold.
Personality and traits[]
Lord Kale was a very trusting man who believed that, since Fax was buying Ruathan runners, he would not invade Ruatha. This turned out to be his downfall, when the man he had trusted seized the Hold and slew everyone in it.
Notes[]
- Prior to the publication of The Masterharper of Pern, Kale's name was said to be Micawl — as is stated in The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern. Also in Dragonharper (Crossroads), his name is Micawl.
