Tenim used Grief for tracking because Tenim considered Grief to be a better tracker than Halla.
Tenim caused Grief to kill Pellar's fire lizard Chitter. When Tenim's attempt to kill Pellar failed, and Pellar recovered from falling into a cold mountain stream, Pellar caused both Grief and Tenim to die.
