Earthquakes, sometimes called "earthshakes", occurred on Pern from time to time. Sometimes they were accompanied by a tsunami.

An earthquake occurred prior to the First Pass while the colonists held their thanksgiving celebration. Patrice de Broglie and his team determined that it originated far out in the ocean. The dolphins noted that the native Pern marine life was aware of the earthquake before it happened.

During the First Pass, several earthquakes occurred as a percursor to the eruption of Mount Garben.

Earthquakes were frequent on the Southern Continent. They also occurred on the Northern Continent, especially in Crom, the High Reaches, Igen and Telgar Plain.
