Drum codes were used on Pern to communicate across long distances. Drums were located on drumheights at the major holds, crafthalls and weyrs. Drum codes were based on PNA.

Drum codes were taught to apprentices in the Harpercraft. Apprentices were expected to memorize certain codes and repeat them. Apprentices were also expected to listen to incoming codes and attempt to translate them as a form of practice. Though only learned and taught by the Harpercraft, some non-Harpers who lived at the Harper Hall were able to translate drum codes.

Drum codes could be intricate based on the message. There were specific codes to signify urgent messages, as well as codes specifically for communication between Harpers.
