Drums were an important means of communication on Pern. They were also used as musical instruments.

As communication

Drums were usually set at drumheights at the major Holds. Drummers used drum codes, which were developed late in the First Pass and were based on PNA. The teaching of drum codes was part of the Harper Hall curriculum.

As music

Harper apprentices learned how to make drums. If a drum was stamped by a Master, it could be sold at a gather.
