Cherry Duff was the oldest colonist to travel to Pern. She was the colony magistrate and official historian. On the trip, she was accompanied by several great-grandchildren.
Prior to traveling to Pern, she was the defender of Cygnus III.
At Landing, Cherry administered justice where needed.
When the first Threadfall occurred, she suffered a stroke but recovered from it.
Cherry was satisfied with the punishment of shunning that was meted out to Ted Tubberman. She wanted to shun his suspected accomplices, Stev Kimmer, Bart Lemos and Nabhi Nabol. She was delighted to impose Tubberman's punishment.
Cherry constantly insisted on updates regarding the dragons' progress. She was dismayed to learn that it would take generations for them to fight Thread, until she learned that dragon generations were only about three years.
At Fort Hold, Cherry was one of the many people that greeted the triumphant dragonriders after their first Threadfall, though she had to be supported by two of her sons.
It was at Cherry's insistence that cultural material from Earth and other cultures be brought to Pern. Cherry had a habit of speaking idiomatically to emphasize her points.
