Before Landing refers to the time before the colonists landed on Pern. It includes the time the survey team from the Exploration and Evaluation Corps surveyed the planet.

Landing officially occurred when the first shuttle, the Eujisan, led the five other shuttles in bringing colonists, including leaders Paul Benden and Emily Boll, to Pern.

The colonists spent fifteen years on the colony ships, most of them spending at least five years in deep sleep. On arriving at Pern, the ships remained in orbit while probes explored the planet, looking for the best landing site.
