As a younger son, Bargen was not the first-choice heir; he was, however, the only one of his family to survive Fax's takeover, leaving him as the only possible heir of the direct bloodline.
Bargen survived Fax's butchery by hiding with his followers in the abandoned High Reaches Weyr, a place it was agreed Fax would never venture to, while waiting to reclaim his birthright as ordained by the Charter. Far from wasting their time in exile, Bargen and his ever-growing contingent in the Weyr sabotaged work throughout Fax's holds, doing things like burning ships and collapsing profitable mines in order to undermine Fax's empire in much the same way that Lessa of the Ruatha Bloodline was doing in Ruatha Hold. While in exile, Bargen was found by Nip, and from then on maintained occasional communication with Masterharper Robinton, who did his best to provide discrete assistance. After Fax's death, he was confirmed as Lord Holder of High Reaches Hold.
Following his confirmation, Bargen worked hard to recover his Hold from the damage Fax had done and build his reputation as a fair and reliable Lord Holder. After Ranrel was banished from Tillek Hold by his father Lord Oterel, it was Bargen who championed him to the council. With his approval as motivation, Oterel finally retracted his banishment two sevendays before he died, and Bargen was able to witness Oterel's pride in his son.
Personality and traits
Bargen was a hardworking man, and worked his sons, including Hosbon, as hard as himself. He was known to be conservative on many things, but also dedicated to fairness, as evinced by his refusal to submit to Fax's unlawful holding. At the Council Meeting at Telgar Hold, he was the only Council member opposed to a Lady Holder at Southern Boll Hold.
