Loosely allied with the Smithcraft, the Technicians took over repairing and improving the new technology. The main crafthall was to be at Landing, in order to be in close proximity to the main Aivas terminal and its extensive database. A second crafthall would be located near the Smithcrafthall in Telgar. Benelek was named the first Craftmaster.
The technicians experimented with the new forms of technology, making useful gadgets and constructing machines from plans in Aivas’s database. Not all of the diagrams in the files could be used because some of the materials were not available on Pern, but the Technicians fiddled with the designs to achieve similar ends. They learned new applications for the principles given to them by Aivas. such as using ultrasound as an analysis device on a molecular level. Among the inventions of particular use were a more effective wheel/axle grease, and colter pins that neither bent nor snapped, carting them the thanks of every cart and wagon owner on Pern.
The Technicians provided the Pernise with reliable timepieces for the first time a thousands of years. Barometers were a new tool of use to sea men and women, as well as land-dwellers whose livelihood was affected by the weather. A transmitter/receiver project resulted in a communication system that could attaa greater distance and clarity than radios could. Each would have a code number that could be tapped out on buttons on the units, like telephones on Earth.
